Forestburgh is actually not a town, but one of the fifteen townships in Sullivan County, however it is the second smallest, and it has no real town center, so all of Forestburgh is kind of viewed like other hamlets or towns in Sullivan.
Forestburgh is becoming more popular of an area. Per capita is boasts the wealthiest residents in the county, and yet when you are driving through Forestburgh, it feels as though it is the least inhabited. Most of the Forestburgh gems are neatly hidden away, among the forested countryside.
Merriewold is one such gem. It is was founded right around the turn of the last century, as a mountain getaway for the New York elite. In fact a Titanic survivor holding a first class ticket owned a home for many years in Merriewold. And today there are a few well known names scattered about in this development. It is an area of homes around a spring fed pristine mountain lake. There is only one way in, and the whole area exudes an “On Golden Pond” feel.
The Forestburgh Playhouse is another gem. Founded in 1947, it is your quintessential summer stock theater. The productions are a mixture of Broadway classics, musicals, a few original plays, and they always have a production or two for the kids. Seeing a show here on a July or August evening is a must.
Lost Lake Resort is the newest venture in Forestburgh. Final approval has been given, and the plan is to break ground spring 2014. It will be a gated community set on almost 2,000 acres. An eighteen hole golf course, a spa, a clubhouse with indoor/outdoor pools and tennis courts, a fitness center and on site lodging, and dining is just some of the amenities that are boasted.
Lake Joseph is another area that is slated for development. The entire back side of the lake almost (800 acres) has been in the planning stages for years, as it passed through a few different owners hands. Now with the dam fixed, and all these other projects on the table, it is safe to assume that this area will see some sort of activity.
Forestburgh can still be an affordable option for a second home. However with all the changes slated to happen here in Sullivan County over the next few years, that could change.
